Teagasc closing 2 offices in Rural County Carlow –

Clllr Pat Deering – Fine Gael candidate for Carlow in the forthcoming General Election – expressed deep concern at the coming closure of Teagasc offices in Tullow and ……….

Deering commented that with the demise of the Celtic Tiger and the property boom it is now obvious that Agriculture is carrying the economy of rural Ireland and its continued success and prosperity is vital to the future of rural Ireland and in particular Carlow.

While accepting that we are in tough economic times and that all state and semi-state agencies had to make economies in their administration and provision of services , Cllr Deering questioned the need for closing the 2 rural offices in County Carlow – in particular the office in Tullow and relocating all the staff and facilities to Oakpark where 4.25 million euros has been spent extending the offices there to accommodate them.

Deering added that “Tullow is a genuine Agricultural town – with lots of agri-service outlets ,the Tullow mart and the famed Tullow Show which made it the main centre and hub for farmers from not just Carlow, but neighbouring areas of Kildare,Wicklow and Wexford. The Teagasc offices in Tullow were ideally located next to the mart which made access to for farmers and others in the agri-business very easy as they could combine their business with Teagasc with other business they would be doing in the town – now they will have to take time out of their busy schedules to make the journey to Carlow to access Teagasc services.

Deering concluded by asking Teasgasc to give serious thought to re-considering their proposed closures of the rural Carlow offices – “ it goes against Teagascs’ prime aim of being in the centre of our agricultural community and offering their services and advice to farmers in their local communities”
