Vote Yes on Oct 27th to end tribunal saga – Deering

Carlow Fine Gael TD, Pat Deering today called for a Yes vote on the 27th October on the referendum on inquiries by the Oireachtas, saying the successful passage of the referendum will provide an effective alternative to tribunals.

“Nobody needs to be reminded of the tortuous, costly and lengthy saga the tribunals turned out to be. We need a more efficient system to hold people to account in an effective and timely fashion.

“Fine Gael promised political reform and the Referendum on Oireachtas inquiries will strengthen our democracy. People who have failed the public by acting irresponsibly or wasting public money should be made to account to a public forum and there is no better way to do so than through the people’s parliament.”

Power to the People, FG’s Deering says Yes vote on Oct 27 will enhance public accountability

Carlow Fine Gael TD, Pat Deering, today said a Yes vote on the referendum on Oireachtas inquiries will allow issues of public importance to be put under the spotlight in a public, cost-efficient and timely fashion.

“The Irish parliament is lacking powers which are common in other European parliaments. Fine Gael wants to strengthen the power of parliament to act on behalf of the people to secure accountability in our society in areas where significant systemic failures have taken place.

“Voting Yes on the 27th October will provide a cross-party parliamentary system of inquiry which will ensure that when matters of importance to the general public come to light they can be subjected to a rigorous inquiry. It will deliver on political reform by making our system more open, transparent and effective for the public.”
