New Carlow sign to be erected on M9

Carlow Fine Gael TD, Pat Deering, has said he is delighted to confirm that Carlow has been placed firmly back on the map, after he received confirmation that Carlow will be included on a new sign on the M9 motorway at Junction 11.

“It’s been a matter of concern to me since I was elected to the Dáil that for some unknown reason, Carlow was omitted from the motorway sign for Junction 11. Waterford, Kilkenny and Kilcullen all have pride of place on the original sign, with no mention of Carlow.

“This situation was not only causing confusion for motorists, it was also a source of serious concern for those involved in tourism in the Carlow area. How can we expect people to visit Carlow if they can’t even find it in the first place? There was also a safety factor, I have heard stories of people reversing back to the exit when they realised they had missed it.

“I have been making regular representations to the Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, on this issue and we’ve now made significant progress. A new sign is to be erected 750m from Junction 11, clearing stating that Carlow can be accessed by the turnoff.

“This is a victory for common sense, and indeed for the people of Carlow. It’s completely unacceptable that road signage on one of the country’s main route ways would be misleading, and I would like to thank Minister Varadkar for taking action to amend this glaring oversight.”
