Deering Welcomes Five Year School Building Programme.

11th March, 2012

The Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn will today announce the Governments Five Year School Building Programme. Carlow Fine Gael TD, Pat Deering in welcoming the news said “this is great news for four Carlow Schools, New Schools for Carlow Vocational School and Educate Together and massive extensions and refurbishments for Tullow Community School and Knockbeg College. I’m particularly excited that my own former school Tullow Community School has been included”

In all there will be 160 new schools and 120 extensions built nationally. This will put €1.5bn into the economy and will create 15000 direct and 3000 indirect jobs which equates to 3600 annual average over the next five years.

Between now and 2017 there will be an extra 45000 Primary and 25000 Post Primary Children attending our schools.

Deputy Deering said “this announcement comes on the back of the 60 new schools under construction at present, most of which will completed during 2012 and only two weeks ago the Government announced it is to spend €35m replacing prefabs around the country. It is further evidence of this Governments commitment to education and will also be of great help to the much depressed Construction Industry”
