Deering welcomes IFA support for Stability Treaty referendum.

4th April, 2012

Carlow Fine Gael TD, Pat Deering, has welcomed the decision by the Irish Farmers Association’s (IFA) to recommend a YES vote on the Stability Treaty to its 90,000 members and has said it is a significant step in the campaign to ratify the Treaty.

“I am delighted that the Executive Council of the IFA has recognised and acknowledged the huge benefits that farm families, their businesses and the rural economy have received from membership of stable currency, CAP and indeed the EU itself.

“A ‘YES’ to the Stability Treaty on May 31st will allow successful sectors such as agri-food production and exports, to continue to grow and expand for the benefit of the entire Irish economy. Many of the terms of the Stability Treaty on budget deficits and Government debt are already in place, the ratification of the Treaty will merely bring these into Irish law.

“The IFA will now embark on an active communications campaign to inform their almost 90,000 members of the benefits of a YES vote. A series of information meetings will be held around the Country in the coming weeks including one for the South East to be held in Carlow. IFA President, John Bryan, will address the Oireachtas Sub- Committee on the Stability Treaty on Thursday April 5th before the Nationwide campaign gets under way.”
