Agriculture Committee Chairman to engage in wide-ranging briefings on CAP reform

6th June, 2012

The Chairman of the Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture Andrew Doyle TD today travels to Copenhagen for a conference   on CAP reform involving fellow parliamentarians from across the European Union.

The series of high-level meetings take place in and around the Danish Parliament on Thursday and Friday, 7 and 8 June, as part of the current EU Presidency, which is being hosted by Denmark.

Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “In a decisive period for the Common Agricultural Policy, the conference provides a valuable opportunity for parliamentarians, academics and officials from across the European Union to share their perspectives on CAP reform.

“The wide-ranging programme in Copenhagen is heavily focussed on upcoming challenges associated with CAP and includes presentations on dairy farming, the greening proposals, organic farming and the implications for CAP reform on the developing world.

“With Ireland hosting the EU Presidency in the first six months of 2013, our Committee is acutely aware of the importance of the upcoming CAP negotiations for Ireland. A key priority for the Committee, we last month discussed the subject in detail with farming organisations, Irish MEPs and department officials. I intend, on behalf of the Committee, to feed Irish perspectives on CAP reform into the discussions in the coming days.”
