Deering Welcomes ‘Active Travel’ Funding for Carlow.

Carlow TD, Pat Deering has welcomed the Governments announcement that almost €1m has been allocated to Carlow for ‘Active Travel’ projects. Funding of €4.5m has been allocated to eleven local authorities for the implementation of cycling and walking strategies. Carlow have been allocated €939,850.


The Carlow application outlined a plan for the implementation of a walking and cycling strategy for Carlow town and Graiguecullen. The proposal is designed to integrate, link and provide walking and cycling infrastructure the whole town of Carlow with school, shops, leisure facilities, colleges and transport hubs. It places a focus on the provision of high quality links from core centres and residential areas.


Fine Gael TD, Deputy Deering said “this is good news for Carlow, I’m delighted this Government sees Carlow town and county as a place worthy of investment. This is coming only two weeks after an allocation of almost €500k to provide a cycle track from Carlow to Kilkenny. After years of neglect by Fianna Fail led Governments its great to see something positive happening in Carlow.


“We are trying to create a more cycle-friendly and walking-friendly culture in Ireland, trying to get people out of their cars and onto bicycles and footpaths, it’s all part of this Governments sustainable travel policy. As well as benefitting the people of Carlow, the investment is also welcome in terms of job creation carrying out the necessary adjustments”.
