Deering elected vice chair of new Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

9th July, 2012

Carlow Fine Gael TD, Pat Deering has been elected vice chair of the newly formed Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Since this Government came to office fifteen months ago these were included in the much wider ranging committee of Agriculture, Communications and Natural Resources.

Deputy Deering said of his election “I am delighted to be elected to this position, the chair is near neighbour and Wicklow man Andrew Doyle and together with Andrew I hope to make this committee relavent and effective. This is a very important time for Irish farmers and Agricultural related industries especially as we negotiate CAP reform. Farming, fishing and tourism were once the backbone of Ireland’s economy and despite the welcome emergence of other Hi-Tech industries I feel these three will continue to play a big part in our recovery and in our future. To be honest the Committee of Agriculture, Communications and Natural Resources was probably too broad and it was very difficult to get time to address all the issues such a wide ranging brief required. We could have been looking at anything from CAP to the recent RTE debacle to Electric Cable Pylons. This committee will be more focussed and I look forward to playing my part in its success.
