Memorandum of Understanding is a Positive Step Towards University – Deering.

16th August, 2012

“The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) made recently between the Governing Bodies of the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) and Institute of Technology, Carlow (ITC) is another positive step towards a Technological University of the South East”, according to Carlow T.D. Pat Deering.

Both Institutes have agreed to explore together the establishment of a multi-campus Technical University in the South East. The parties will jointly participate in the creation and development of a strategic amalgamation of both Institutes into a new entity, a Technological University (TU).

The proposed TU will be an entrepreneurial and outward looking higher education and research institution. It will have an enhanced capacity to deliver regional, national and international objectives in a coordinated, efficient and market responsive manner. The TU model will be designed to also enhance the regional environment for the development of indigenous enterprises, the creation of new high-potential start up companies and the attractiveness of the region for future foreign direct investment.

Carlow Fine Gael TD, Pat Deering has welcomed this latest development, “This is a very positive step, both institutes now have a common goal, they have identified and agreed the best way forward. The South East has become an unemployment black-spot in recent times withe the loss of many significant companies that have not been replaced. I welcome this agreement and I think the establishment of a Technological University in the South East will be a major boost to the region.”

“Both Colleges are committed to this project and both Parties recognise that a successful outcome will require a huge amount of work in developing and implementing initiatives and strategies that will eventually lead to full amalgamation. Both sides respect and trust each other and there is open communications at all times and a commitment from all members of both Institutions to work towards the common goal”
