JOINT COMMITTEE ON AGRICULTURE, FOOD AND THE MARINE to Meet on Horse DNA Issue — Deering

16th January, 2013

16.01.2013.

Following yesterdays disturbing  Food Safety Authority Ireland Survey Results with regard to the presence of horse DNA in some beef burger products, Carlow Fine Gael TD and Vice Chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Pat Deering, has called for a thorough investigation into the whole affair at committee level. “We should invite the owners / operators of both factories involved as well as officials from the Department  and representatives from the Food Safety Authority Ireland”.

“As a country we have worked too hard to create and maintain our international reputation for supply of quality beef products to let this set us back. We must get to the bottom of it immediately, we must get to the source of this unacceptable practice. Our Committee is due to meet Department and Food Safety Authority officials next Tuesday and I’m asking Committee Chairman Andrew Doyle to extend the investigation to include the factory owners also”
