Carlow Regional Youth Services requires much needed injection of funds – Deering

19th April, 2013

Carlow Fine Gael TD, Pat Deering, has urged the Minister for Children, Frances Fitzgerald, to address the funding crisis in Carlow Regional Youth Services (CRYS) which has seen a significant reduction in funding since 2008.

“While I understand the difficult economic situation the country is in, I am urging Minister Fitzgerald to see if there is any scope within her budget to alleviate the financial pressure CRYS is under. The Cuts to date and the proposed cuts for 2014 are having a serious impact on the services groups like Carlow Regional Youth Services (CRYS) can provide. Without funding these services will choke.

“The impact of the cuts to date has resulted in a reduction in the number of youth work hours provided to young people in disadvantaged areas. More cuts will further decimate youth services in Carlow and right across the country. There are no more savings that can be made without significant further reduction in services to vulnerable young people.

“This week is ‘Youth Work Ireland Week’ and I am urging the Minister to see if there if any adjustments can be made within the Children’s Department to free up some funds for CRYS. I have requested a ‘Topical Issue’ Dail debate on this and I am waiting a response.
