Deering welcomes passage of Construction Contracts Bill.

24th July, 2013

Carlow Fine Gael TD, Pat Deering, has welcomed the passing of the Construction Contracts Bill 2010. The Bill will provide greater payment security to sub-contractors and other small operators in the construction industry.

“The Construction Contracts Bill will bring certainty to the entire construction industry. This legislation started in 2010 and ultimately took over three years to pass through the Oireachtas. However, it has now finally been passed and it is hoped it will play a significant role in getting the Construction Industry back on its feet.

“The Bill makes for an even playing field for smaller contractors and sub-contractors when ensuring payments are timely. This has been an on-going problem for many years where small suppliers are left high and dry, after they have completed their work, either because the contractor has gone out of business or is refusing to pay.

“This new legislation will help to bring an end to this practice, and will ensure that small contractors and sub-contractors no longer have to work in fear of not being paid at the end of a project.

“I would like to acknowledge the huge part Senator Fergal Quinn played in this process, without his commitment this legislation might not have come to pass, or at least not at this time”
