€5m in funding will help make Carlow roads better and safer – DEERING

24th January, 2014

Carlow Fine Gael TD, Pat Deering, has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar TD, that the Government has approved €5m in funding for Carlow County Council for regional and local roads. This is part of an €333 million investment programme for 2014 aimed at improving and making safer our regional and local roads.

“I am delighted that this funding has been sanctioned for Carlow County Council. This additional funding is to be used for surface restoration works, strengthening and maintenance of roads, road safety works and the rehabilitation of bridges. Motorists and road users in Carlow will welcome the fact that their roads and bridges will be safer and in better condition.

“Despite a cut of 17% Nationally Carlow have managed to secure a 10% increase on the 2013 allocation.

“I commend Minister Varadkar for making these funds available despite the financial constraints under which the Government is operating. His approach of using available funding for road repair and safety is sensible. This funding will add significantly to road safety in Carlow and further improve the local and regional roads across the county.

“Whilst individual local authorities are responsible under law for the upkeep and maintenance of regional and local roads, it is important to emphasise that these grants supplement local authorities’ own spending on regional and local road projects and do not represent the total investment in regional and local roads for this year.”
