Jobs boost for Carlow – Deering

Work to begin on Walsh Whiskey Distillery this summer

Fine Gael Carlow TD, Pat Deering, has welcomed the news that Walsh Whiskey is set to commence construction of its new distillery in Royal Oak this summer, saying that it will provide a real jobs boost for Carlow.

“I am delighted at the news that Walsh Whiskey will commence construction on its new distillery this summer. This development will mean a real boost for jobs in the village and the surrounding Bagnelstown area. The distillery will create 25 news jobs with an additional 40 jobs to be created in the construction phase.

“The distillery will be located on Holloden House Demesne in Royal Oak. Walsh Whiskey is expected to receive full planning permission for the project in the next few weeks, having answered all the questions in the planning application satisfactorily.

“With over 60,000 net new jobs created nationally last year, we are well on the road to economic recovery. However we know that the economic growth has been strongest in Dublin. It is time that the rest of the country also feels the benefit and this new distillery is just one small example of the kind of employment growth happening in small and medium business across Carlow.

“The Government’s Action Plan for Jobs is focused on bringing more opportunities to regional areas and in Co. Carlow the Live Register fell by 7% since Fine Gael entered Government. 669 Enterprise Ireland & IDA jobs were lost here in the last 3 years of Fianna Fáil led Government (2008-2010), while Carlow has gained 425 such jobs under this Fine Gael/ Labour Government.

“I will continue to work hard with the relevant Government Ministers to deliver the supports needed by businesses in Carlow and I hope to see continued employment growth across the county in the next few years. I wish Walsh Whiskey all the best with this new venture and look forward to visiting the distillery when it is completed.”
