Social welfare recipients in Carlow to get €5 increase per week from March – Deering

12th October, 2016

Fine Gael Carlow TD, Pat Deering, has said that in Budget 2017 Fine Gael is working to ensure the benefits of our economic recovery is felt by everyone in Carlow and Minister for Social Protection, Leo Varadkar, has announced social welfare increases of €5 increase per week from March.

“Our system of social welfare supports is a vital protection against the uncertainty of unemployment, the hardship caused by illness or disability and the challenges one encounters when caring for a loved one.

“In Budget 2017 the State pension will rise by €5 per week from March. This is good news for pensioners in Carlow.

“But in order to have a fair budget, Fine Gael was determined that we could not stop at that.

“It has been seven years since many of these payments for people in Carlow were increased. The return of growth and the economic recovery of the last couple of years mean we can now afford to begin to change this and ensure that the benefits of our economic recovery are felt by everyone in Carlow.

“As part of an overall package worth an additional €301 million, all weekly social welfare payments– including the carer’s allowance, disability allowance and jobseeker’s benefit and allowance – will rise by €5 per week, in line with the increase in the State pension. These payments will rise in March, subject to the passage of the Social Welfare Bill.

“In addition, I am delighted to see that the Christmas Bonus of 85% will be paid in early December to 1.2 million Social Welfare recipients, including those here in Carlow.

“Many of those in receipt of these payments are our most vulnerable citizens and we cannot have a just society if we leave them behind.

“We cannot achieve all we want to in one year, but Fine Gael is using the benefits of a strong economy to improve people’s lives here in Carlow.”
