Deering Welcomes commencement of 2016 GLAS and AEOS payments – €117 million agri-environment payments being paid in December.

21st December, 2016

Fine Gael Carlow TD and Chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Pat Deering has today welcomed the announcement by his Fine Gael colleague The Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed TD, that 2016 payments will begin to issue this week under the Green, Low-Carbon, Agri-Environment Scheme (GLAS). The Scheme is co-funded under Ireland’s Rural Development Programme.

Deputy Deering said “I am pleased that payments will commence for the first full year of the GLAS Scheme to participants in the first two tranches of GLAS. Payments representing 85% of the full year payment for 2016, the first full year of the Scheme, will commence and are expected to reach bank accounts in the coming days.

Deering added “These payments worth just under €100 million nationally, will give a welcome boost to both the wider rural economy throughout the country and to individual Scheme participants in Carlow which will be particularly welcome given the challenges faced by farmers in recent times”

“2016 AEOS payments amounting to more than €17 million have also been paid to over 5,200 participants who are still in that scheme.

“Further GLAS payments will continue to issue on an ongoing basis as queries are resolved and Deputy Deering urged participating Carlow farmers to return any outstanding documentation as soon as possible to facilitate payment. In cases where any other outstanding issues with individual applications are resolved, payments will issue on an ongoing basis.

Deering concluded “I am very pleased with the progress with the GLAS Scheme to date with the issuing of the first full year of payments and the level of interest shown by farmers in participating in the third tranche of the Scheme.”
