120 new jobs for Carlow.

2nd June, 2017

Fine Gael TD for Carlow Pat Deering has welcomed the news today that 120 jobs will be created by pharmaceutical company MSD which will provide a major boost to Carlow.

As part of a multi-million euro investment MSD, known as Merck in the U.S. and Canada, MSD will create the jobs in Carlow at the company’s first stand-alone vaccine and biologics facility outside the US.

This is part of a €280m investment by the company over the next three years into its Irish operations which are important links in MSD’s global network of manufacturing plants.

Deputy Deering said “the jobs announcement is further proof of Fine Gael’s commitment to improving the economy and securing further investment for Carlow and the South-East region”.

“Such investment is critical to our communities. When a significant number of jobs such as this – 120 – are announced, it provides a boost to all. The new employees will need homes to live in and will in turn invest in the local economy. Our work in government has a knock on effect for all not just the company who initially feel positive benefits.

Carlow is an important link in MSD’s network of sites producing our new immuno-oncology treatment for the global market. Available roles at the sites include technical, engineering, biochemistry, biology, quality and operations positions.

MSD’s site at Carlow is a state-of-the-art, 200,000sqft biologics operation in which the company have invested €220m prior to latest jobs boost. In Carlow, MSD formulate and fill vaccines and biologic products for use by people across the world.

Deputy Deering added “These are exciting times for Carlow. Jobs are coming to our community and we in Fine Gael will continue to look at options for Carlow and see where we can find further employment opportunities.”
