Dairy stakeholders should come before Oireachtas Committee – Deering

17th December, 2014

Fine Gael Carlow/ Kilkenny TD, Pat Deering, has said today (Wednesday) he is delighted that stakeholders in the dairy sector will come before the Committee on Agriculture early in the New Year to discuss their plans to deal with price volatility and capitalise on opportunities in the dairy sector in 2015.

“Dairy farmers are concerned about price volatility and I believe we must deal with the issues head on. I welcome the fact the main stakeholders in the dairy sector will appear before the Agriculture Committee early in the New Year.

“The potential difficulties and price volatility in the dairy industry in the coming year need to be managed and monitored carefully. The Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture can lead the way with this on our New Year work programme, including the processors, farm organisations, Teagasc and the financial institutions. When these important stakeholders come before the Committee we can ascertain from them how they plan to deal with the difficulties that may arise, and how we can best support them.

“2015 is a year of opportunity for the dairy sector with the abolition of milk quotas in April. We need to ensure that our dairy farmers are best placed to capitalise on this.”
