60% of Bagnelstown housing list to be eliminated by new developments – Deering

2nd November, 2015

Fine Gael Carlow/Kilkenny TD, Pat Deering, has said that 60% of Bagnelstown’s housing list is to be eliminated by two new developments in the area.

“I am delighted to hear that the new 26 unit housing estate for Bagnelstown is going to tender next Monday (2nd November). The tender process should take a couple of months and it is hoped that the sod will be turned on this development in January.

“This is in addition to another project which will see Carlow County Council develop 18 plus units in Bagnelstown.

“Between the two projects, they will eliminate 60% of Bagnelstown’s housing waiting list, which is welcome news for all those who have been waiting for too long for a home.

“Budget 2016 increased the current allocation for social housing by €69 million to €414 million. This will enable local authorities to secure accommodation for an additional 14,000 households nationally. The funding for emergency accommodation for homeless people has also been increased by €17 million, which brings Exchequer support to €70 million, up 56% since 2014. Projects like these ones in Bagnelstown go a long way towards taking a significant number of people off housing waiting lists. In total, the ongoing Social Housing 2020 strategy, will deliver 35,000 new social housing units at a cost of €3.8 billion over the period to 2020.”
